What is CHM ?

Let’s have a look at Wikipedia:

Microsoft Compiled HTML Help is a proprietary format for online help files, developed by Microsoft and first released in 1997 as a successor to the Microsoft WinHelp format. It was first introduced with the release of Windows 98, and is still supported and distributed through Windows XP and Vista platforms.

“.chm” is one kind of headache for Linux users so let’s find the best useful CHM viewer for Ubuntu/Linux. I have some great eBooks but in CHM format, so I have been always finding a good and useful CHM Viewer for my system.

My requirements of a CHM Viewer program include:

Be able to read .chm file (of course)

Good looking

Support non-English language

Still under development since by time new Ubuntu version releases, so it may have some bugs when we upgrades our systems.

Let’s go to Applications, Ubuntu Software Center and type chm you could see there are 5 available CHM viewer apps in Ubuntu server:

xCHM

E-Book reader

CHM Viewer

Chmsee

KchmViewer

They are all active projects, but I did have a look at all features and tried all but only KchmViewer can satisfy me. Let’s have a look at its features

Kchmviewer is a free, open-source chm (MS HTML help file format) viewer written in C++ for Unix, Mac and Windows systems. Unlike most existing CHM viewers for Unix, it uses Trolltech Qt widget library, and could optionally be compiled for better KDE integration. It does not require KDE, but may be compiled with full KDE support, including KDE widgets and KIO/KHTML.

The main advantage of kchmviewer is the best support for non-English languages. Unlike other viewers, kchmviewer in most cases is able to correctly detect the chm file encoding and show it. It correctly shows the index and table of context in Russian, Spanish, Romanian, Korean, Chinese and Arabic help files, and with new search engine is able to search in any chm file no matter what language it is written.

kchmviewer is written by George Yunaev (see the contacts page for details), and is licensed under GNU GPL license. It uses chmlib, and some ideas and code from xchm.

You can have a look at here in more detail. I can give you some reasons why I love this app more than others:

Written by using QT Library which is the best cross-platform library. You will feel that each button and edges are very smooth and clean.

Support non-English languages

Can view .chm files in tabs. I am always tired of managing a lot of opened files in desktop, so this feature helps me a lot then

How to install KChmViewer

Just open Terminal:

sudo aptitude install kchmviewer

and type your super user password, and enjoy the program by going to Applications >> Office

Yahoo Protocol 16 support, including new HTTPS login method; this should fix a number of login problems that have recently cropped up. (Sulabh Mahajan, Mike “Maiku” Ruprecht)

Only display the AIM “Unable to Retrieve Buddy List” message once per connection. (Rob Taft)

In my option, I always want to get newest packages from their repositories instead of default Ubuntu’s repositories, so we need to update PPA.

Step 1: Setup PPA

To setup the PPA, copy-and-paste these commands into a terminal:

sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com \
     67265eb522bdd6b1c69e66ed7fb8bee0a1f196a8

and

echo deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/pidgin-developers/ppa/ubuntu \
    `lsb_release --short --codename` main | \
sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pidgin-ppa.list

Step 2: Update pidgin

Update repositories by typing command:

sudo apt-get update

How to install ATI package for Ubuntu system is the controversial issue in the Ubuntu community, but just little people have been success to install ATI driver. Drivers which are from Ubuntu resposities don’t support full function for example: dual monitor in Ubuntu 9.04 and Ubuntu 9.10 as well.

In this post How to install Ubuntu 9.04 on notebook MSI VX600 I have introduced how to install ATI driver by using that tutorial but I am wrong, you will not be able to boot your system after updating your system.

So I write this post to guide how to install ATI Graphic Driver on your Ubuntu system: notebook VX600 using the latest driver which is supported by ATI instead of Ubuntu package.

When you install Ubuntu system (with acpi=off), please don’t go to the System -> Administration -> Hardware and enable the drivers. Sometimes you could not see the ATI hardware in that list, so don’t worry about that ( I spent a lot of time to figure out why but now I ignore that).

Step 1: Update your Ubuntu system

After you install Ubuntu, it is better to update to get the latest package from Ubuntu Synaptic. Later, I will show you why you should do that.

Step 2: Download the latest ATI package

First, you have to download the latest ATI driver package. In this case, I am going to download ATI Radeon HD3xxx driver.

And click Go button, you will be able to download ati-driver-installer-9-5-x86.x86_64.run

Step 3: Install ATI package

Normally, that file will be saved on your desktop. So open Terminal and browse to your desktop:

$ cd Desktop

Install the package with root user:

$ sudo sh ./ati-driver-installer-9-5-x86.x86_64.run

It will detect automatically X version and open the wizard, and click continue:

Agree with the license:

Choose Automatic mode and continue:

Wait for a while during it is installing on your system:

Step 4: Config ATI driver

Open terminal and type this command:

$sudo /usr/bin/aticonfig --initial -f

The /etc/X11/xorg.conf content after I have finished ATI configuration:

Now reboot your system, and see what happens next boot time , you can remove line acpi=off in the /boot/grub/menu.lst as well.

Step 5: Configure ATI Driver

After you install ATI driver, you will see the ATI Catalyst Control Center and ATI Catalyst Control Center (super-user). From now on, you can setup your ATI as you always do in windows:

Note, if the windows does not appear after you update your Ubuntu system, you should repeat from step 2 again.

I guess that you will be able to config Dual monitor as well with this driver. I din’t test yet, I will test this function with my computer in my Lab.

Get fun !

In this post, I would like to introduce the easiest way to backup and restore the Ubuntu system from my experiences.For more information about backup and restore you can see this post

I am usually doing crazy with my system so it is really necessary to backup the system file before dong such things

Backup

The basic idea is using Tar command. I recommend to backup your system and your personal data separately to avoid the very big backup files and the system file is more important than anything else.

The basic command is:

sudo tar cvpjf backup.tar.bz2  --exclude=/sys  /

We should exclude some directories because of some reasons:

I usually mount other partions under /media directory, but someone they usually mount under /mnt directory. So we should exclude /media and /mn.

Folder: /var/cache/apt/archives we should remove from backup file because it stores the cache apt files, we don’t need to make the backup file smaller. After several days, if you forget to delete those files, your backup file will get bigger.

Folder: /home we should exclude because we will store the personal data separately.

Foder /tmp we can exclude because it stores the temp files only.

Of course, the backup file before: backup.tar.bz2

Finally, we get the backup commands are: ( I include all necessary commands also)

cd /

sudo tar cvpjf backup.tar.bz2 --exclude=/proc --exclude=/lost+found \
--exclude=/backup.tar.bz2 --exclude=/var/cache/apt/archives \
--exclude=/mnt --exclude=/media --exclude=/home --exclude=/tmp  --exclude=/sys /

So just copy those commands and paste on your terminal by using the hotkey: Ctr + Alt + V

For backuping your home data, you can do the same way without or with exclude some directories like:

- Browse to the user directory, let’s assume /home/ngohaibac

cd /home/ngohaibac

- Backup by using tar command and exclude some folders I don’t want to backup

sudo tar cvpjf backup_home.tar.bz2  --exclude=~/store  --exclude=~/backup_home.tar.bz2  .

Store

To get backme the system at the backup time, I recommend you a good way to do:

Step 1

Boot your system using Live Ubuntu CD and delete all directories: /usr, /var, /etc, /bin in the Ubuntu partion. You can use the command like: sudo rm -fr /media/ubuntu_mout_point/usr

Step 2

Restore all files by using tar command:

- Browse to that partion: let’s assume /media/disk

cd /media/disk

- Restore all data:

sudo tar xvpfj backup.tar.bz2 -C  .

Wait for a moment, and reboot your system, now you can get your system again.

Physical Dimension: 358 x 259 x 27-33mm

It have arrived in the yesterday afternoon after finish working in International Dormitory. At that time, I was very happy and I have to install Operating System by myself because it came with only FreeDOS.

Unfortunately, I have tried many times but I have never been successes. When I put the Ubuntu live 9.04 disk and chose install Ubuntu or try without install mode, I always got blank screen. I known that there are some problems with this drivers, special the graphic card’s driver. I guessed that Ubuntu 9.04 does not support drivers well, and tried with OpenSuse 11.0 but I got the same problem: blank screen.

I searched Internet and found out that there are a lof of problems with installing Ubuntu or other Linux branchs almost about graphic card.

Step 1

Insert the Ubuntu live CD, when the startup window appears press F6 and select these options: noapic, acpi=off by press Enter button. Now you will be able to using any modes as normal.

Step 2

Install Ubuntu using Graphical as normal from Ubuntu Wiki: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall

Step 3

After finish installing Ubuntu and go to the system, go to menu System => Administration => Hardware drivers and active all hardwares in the list and install those drivers.

Note that it is necessary to get update first, and then restart the system. There is some issues about ATI Graphic drivers. At this time, you can see and follow this tutorials come from ATI Wiki.

http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Jaunty_Installation_Guide

It is better if you follow this post to install ATI Driver:

How to install ATI Graphic driver for Ubuntu 9.04

Step 4

Disable cpuspeed service by typing the following command in the Terminal window:

sudo update-rc.d cpuspeed remove

Open menu.lst:

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

Find lines started with kernel and remove acpi=off to use the new installed graphic card driver next boot time:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.28-11-generic root=UUID=6f532263-dbcf-4ac5-b173-a79048eb74f3 ro noapic nolapic quiet acpi=off splash

Done !

Note: with this tip you can install Ubuntu on other notebooks as well.

If you feel this tip is good for you, feel free to vote this post. I spent a lot of time with this problem, that is reason why now I still awake at 5AM . I am happy because it is a first blog post when I am using my new notebook.

I was doing my own project using TMS320DM355 EVM with MontaVista realtime Linux is installed some months ago. At that time, I search in Google many times but I didn’t get success to install TFTP. Finally, I found out one great tutorial about that. In my system, I use TFTP protocol to download Linux kernel, U-boot bootloader to DM355 EVM kit.

What is TFTP ?

Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) is a file transfer protocol, with the functionality of a very basic form of File Transfer Protocol (FTP); it was first defined in 1980.

Due to its simple design, TFTP can be implemented in a very small amount of memory — an important consideration at that time. It was therefore useful for booting computers such as routers which did not have any data storage devices. It is still used to transfer small amounts of data between hosts on a network, such as IP phone firmware or operating system images when a remote X Window System terminal or any other thin client boots from a network host or server. The initial stages of some network based installation systems (such as Solaris Jumpstart, Red Hat Kickstart and Windows NT’s Remote Installation Services) use TFTP to load a basic kernel that performs the actual installation.

TFTP is based in part on the earlier protocol EFTP, which was part of the PUP protocol suite. In the early days of work on the TCP/IP protocol suite, TFTP was often the first protocol implemented on a new host type, because it was so simple.

See here for more information

Howto install and setup

In my system, I use Ubuntu 8.04 as Workstation computer to communicate with DM355EVM. You can also use these steps with Ubuntu 8.10 or Ubuntu 9.04.

1. Install tftpd and related packages.

$ sudo apt-get install xinetd tftpd tftp

2. Create /etc/xinetd.d/tftp and put this entry:

service tftp
{
protocol        = udp
port            = 69
socket_type     = dgram
wait            = yes
user            = nobody
server          = /usr/sbin/in.tftpd
server_args     = /tftpboot
disable         = no
}

3. Make /tftpboot directory

$ sudo mkdir /tftpboot
$ sudo chmod -R 777 /tftpboot
$ sudo chown -R nobody /tftpboot

4. Start tftpd through xinetd

$ sudo /etc/init.d/xinetd start

5. Testing. Tranfering file hda.txt from 192.168.1.100 (Client using tftp) to 192.168.1.100 (Server 192.168.1.100). Get an example file to transfer (eg. hda.txt)

$ touch /tftpboot/hda.txt
$ chmod 777 /tftpboot/hda.txt
$ ls -l /tftpboot/
total 0
-rwxrwxrwx  1 davids davids 0 2006-03-27 23:04 hda.txt
$ tftp 192.168.1.100
tftp> put hda.txt
Sent 722 bytes in 0.0 seconds
tftp> quit
$ ls -l /tftpboot/
total 4
-rwxrwxrwx  1 davids davids 707 2006-03-27 23:07 hda.txt

Now we will be able to download new kernel file to my EVM board. Note that you have to configure the bootargs parameters correctly, otherwise you can’t download to your EVM board. I will introduce how to setup in Ubuntu in another post.

Today, I would like to introduce the Vietnamese input method in Ubuntu. Scim-Unikey is the most stable package for typing Vietnamese characters, by combining the advantages of Smart Character Input Method (SCIM) and the most famous Vietnam input method Unikey. Scim-Unikey now is maintained by Ubuntu-VN and Vietnamese Ubuntu Community. If you want to learn Vietnamese language, I recommend you to use Scim-Unikey in Ubuntu.

If you are using Ubuntu 9.10 or Ubuntu 10.04, please refer to install Vietnamese Input Method ibus-unikey in Ubuntu since IBus becomes the main input method manager instead of Scim.

I had great chance to visit ubuntuforums.org when I tried to finger out the sound solution of Ubuntu system because the sound is not really good enough compared to listen in Windows OS. The threat is very great, you can see here. And now they update some information for Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 here.
This post I will try to show step by step the way to make your sound to be great.

Install the needed packages

The first is to install the necessary packages with Synaptic because these packages are not installed by default when you install Ubuntu, but they are very important to make the great sound. It can be done by searching the package name in Synaptic or using command in Terminal: sudo apt-get install package_name

Name

Meaning

asoundconf-gtk

This is a little Default Sound Card application for Choosing the default sound card for Alsa.

gnome-alsamixer

This is a gui mixer, far easier to use than the command line alsamixer.

Alsa-OSS

This is the wrapper for OSS applications so they will use Alsa instead of grabbing the sound card all for themselves

libasound2
libasound2-plugins

These are the plugins for Alsa

padevchooser

This is the Pulse Audio device chooser and will pull in the pavucontrol which is the Pulse Audio Volume Control and papref which is the Pulse Audio Preferences along with the Pulse Audio Volume meters.

gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio

This is the GStreamer plugin for pulseaudio

Ubuntu-restricted-extras

This is the package with all the restricted codecs and java and flashplayer so you can watch youtube and play your mp3s, etc. ..

asoundconf-gtk

This is a little Default Sound Card application for Choosing the default sound card for Alsa.

If you use other applications like mplayer, vlc, amarok or audacious should install additional packages named link between the package and the application (usually the type of plugin).

Setup your system

Go to menu System/Preferences/Sound and change all to PulseAudio Sound Server except Default Mixer Tracks to be as default:

Go to System/Preferences/Default Sound Card and choose PulseAudio

Righ click on the sound icon at the top right of your desktop named Panel Volume Control and choose Open Volume Control and click on Preferences and choose the things you want except SPDIF or IEC958. You also make sure that all controls work well by moving the slides to avoid to leave them in mute mode.

Go to Applications/Sound & Video and choose Pulse Audio Device Chooser. Left mouse click on that icon and choose Volume control and try to play 1 song, at the tab named Playback, you can see somethings are running. In my case, I am playing 1 song in Firefox.

If you have more than one output sound devices, you can enable all of theme by left click on PulseAudio Applet, and choose Configure Local Sound Server/Simulataneous Output, then choose Add virtual output device for simutaneous output on all local sound cards:

The last step you have to do is to check in System/Administration/Users and Groups that your users and root are enabled as members of the following groups:

pulse

pulse-access

pulse-rt

Now you can enjoy your life with your favorite song

Note: It is all things I have done with the old Ubuntu 8.10 but it still works well with my Ubuntu 9.04 system, and now having some new information :

The sound scheme in Jaunty has some important changes that you need to be aware of. Alsa 1.0.18 and Pulseaudio 0.9.14 are implemented in Jaunty. The new ALSA provides more support and greater functionality for more sound devices than previous versions. Pulseaudio 0.9.14 does some of the same on the sound server side.

I will update this post if it have somethings new. If you have some troubles with your sound system, please make sure that you have done step by step or have a look at the mentioned threats: this one or this one.

All Korean input methods

At the moment,there are 3 Korean input methods:

Hangul: use Korean keyboard. For example, typing ‘a’ button we get consonant ㅁ (미음). Learning new type keyboard is very difficult for foreigner because it is easy to confuse with the English typing method, even you do not have Korean keyboard, you may write Korean character on some pieces of paper and stick on some buttons as my friends did. More information about Korean keyboard

Hangul Romaja: the improvement Korean input method I am interesting in. It uses Smart Common Input Method (SCIM)

Hanja: use to type Chinese-Korean characters and also use the keyboard Korean. You can find information about Hanja input method in Wikipedia

Hangul Romaja

Romaja literally means Roman letters in Korean, and refers to the Roman alphabet. “Romaja” is not to be confused with “romanization“. The former can be applied to any use of the Roman alphabet in Korean text—whether for Korean or non-Korean words or names—while the latter refers to writing Korean words using the Roman alphabet: either romanizing individual words in a Korean text, or writing an entire Korean text in the Roman alphabet.

Requirements:

Operating system: Linux based OS like Ubuntu, Fedora, …

SCIM install already.

As you can see, Hangul Romaja input method does not exist in Windows OS, but Linux nowadays becomes very popular so it does not matter. You can use 5 or 6GB for install Linux to learn Korean . Hangul and Hanja input methods are add-ons which Microsoft provided together with Windows OS.

Type Romaja Hangul only available on Ubuntu (Linux) with a package scim-tables-ko by one Korean author, I don’t remember. The most advantage of this method is we can save a lot of time on studying basic Korean chacracters so easy to learn Korean.

This method can be named as What you talk is what you type

For example: say Hello in Korean: 안년 하세요 we talk like this: an ha se yo nyoen and we also type the same thing using Hangul Romaja.

Configuration

I will introduce how to configuration this method in Ubuntu 9.04. You can also apply this configuration in earlier Ubuntu versions.

First you have to install SCIM (install already in Ubuntu distros) and scim-tables-ko in Synaptic or by typing these commands in Terminal:

sudo apt-get install SCIM

sudo apt-get install scim-tables-ko

And then, go to menu System -> Administration -> Language Support, type your super user password and select Use input method engines (IME) to enter complex characters.

Go to menu Sytem -> Preferences -> SCIM Input Method Setup and you can see Hangul Romaja in the Global Setup and you can choose the hotkeys for this input method. Note that you can also assign hotkeys for the traditional input methods: Hangul, Hanja.

And now, it is the time to restart your system.

Hangul Romaja Table

Actually, if you learn Korean for a while you will know how to type each characters in the pronounciation type, but I also mention this table as below:

You can also download this file as .pdf format Hangul Romaja Table.pdf (322) or Hangul Romaja table (Open office file) (154).

Now you can have fun with Korean language. I hope this lovely method will encourage you to learn Korean.
