All Korean input methods

At the moment, there are 3 Korean input methods:

Hangul: use Korean keyboard. For example, typing ‘a’ button we get consonant ㅁ (미음). Learning new type keyboard is very difficult for foreigner because it is easy to confuse with the English typing method, even you do not have Korean keyboard, you may write Korean character on some pieces of paper and stick on some buttons as my friends did. More information about Korean keyboard

Hangul Romaja: the improvement Korean input method I am interesting in. It uses Smart Common Input Method (SCIM)

Hanja: use to type Chinese-Korean characters and also use the keyboard Korean. You can find information about Hanja input method in Wikipedia

Hangul Romaja

Romaja literally means Roman letters in Korean, and refers to the Roman alphabet. “Romaja” is not to be confused with “romanization“. The former can be applied to any use of the Roman alphabet in Korean text—whether for Korean or non-Korean words or names—while the latter refers to writing Korean words using the Roman alphabet: either romanizing individual words in a Korean text, or writing an entire Korean text in the Roman alphabet.

Requirements:

Operating system: Linux based OS like Ubuntu, Fedora, …

SCIM install already.

As you can see, Hangul Romaja input method does not exist in Windows OS, but Linux nowadays becomes very popular so it does not matter. You can use 5 or 6GB for install Linux to learn Korean . Hangul and Hanja input methods are add-ons which Microsoft provided together with Windows OS.

Type Romaja Hangul only available on Ubuntu (Linux) with a package scim-tables-ko by one Korean author, I don’t remember. The most advantage of this method is we can save a lot of time on studying basic Korean chacracters so easy to learn Korean.

This method can be named as What you talk is what you type

For example: say Hello in Korean: 안년 하세요 we talk like this: an ha se yo nyoen and we also type the same thing using Hangul Romaja.

Configuration

I will introduce how to configuration this method in Ubuntu 9.04. You can also apply this configuration in earlier Ubuntu versions.

First you have to install SCIM (install already in Ubuntu distros) and scim-tables-ko in Synaptic or by typing these commands in Terminal:

sudo apt-get install SCIM

sudo apt-get install scim-tables-ko

And then, go to menu System -> Administration -> Language Support, type your super user password and select Use input method engines (IME) to enter complex characters.

Go to menu Sytem -> Preferences -> SCIM Input Method Setup and you can see Hangul Romaja in the Global Setup and you can choose the hotkeys for this input method. Note that you can also assign hotkeys for the traditional input methods: Hangul, Hanja.

And now, it is the time to restart your system.

Hangul Romaja Table

Actually, if you learn Korean for a while you will know how to type each characters in the pronounciation type, but I also mention this table as below:

You can also download this file as .pdf format Hangul Romaja Table.pdf (322) or Hangul Romaja table (Open office file) (154).

Now you can have fun with Korean language. I hope this lovely method will encourage you to learn Korean.
