Thank you very much Francois,

Actually, I am using Ubuntu 9.10 now in my MSI laptop. It works really nice, more stable than other versions. The most important thing is it consumes little CPU even I open the website which has some flash files. Now I can use Ubuntu in my laptop without concerning about anything hehe.

However, with my Desktop computer, I still install ATI graphic driver from amd.com, but not from ubuntu repositories.

Get fun !

Time has passed and the Karmic Koala has arrived! With Ubuntu 9.10, the vx600 laptop by MSI is fully recognized and this right away. In other words, no need to go and change any startup setting, it runs smoothly and supports ACPI, APIC and both cores of the CPU! The only bug I've found so far is the compability issue between the proprietary Modem Driver and the Audio Device... If you activate the Modem driver, you'll lose the sound support, so just disactivate it as it was by default and you'll recover the sound! Of course this solution will satisfy you only if you don't need the modem, if you do, there probably is a solution out there :)
For the Upgrade, I strongly recommend a back up of everything you want to keep before doing anything. The online update did not work with me... it completed but then ubuntu would not reboot, either in acpi=off or in noapic nolapic or normal... So I suggest you do yourself a favour and make a fresh install with EXT4 and brand the brand new Grub version!
You won't be disappointed, the Karmic Koala will give a fresh new start to your laptop!

Hey there again,

I asked a question on here once about 64bit setup. At that moment since I did not have much time to work it out, I just left it for later because I had a lot to do in the last few months. Now that I have a little more time, I downloaded 32bits Ubuntu cd and I installed it with acpi=off with almost no trouble. But as you know I was unfortunately unable to properly use the laptop on battery and so I went back on your page and followed your advice : I disabled cpuspeed and then I put "noapic nolapic" instead of "acpi=off". And now I eventually have the little battery notification on the top right corner!!!! so thanks a lot!!!
However I noticed the system monitor only notices one cpu although it's a core 2 duo and so I reckon the "noapic nolapic" part basically limited the cpu to half its capacity... So is the performance going to be affected by that? is it a problem on a daliy use or maybe on a long term use of the laptop? is there any way of managing the situation so that we could eventually boot with no other option but quiet and splash? would be great, wouldn't it?
And about the "sudo update-rc.d cpuspeed remove" part, can you explain why we did that and what it means for the laptop? I felt like putting it back and seeing what it does but I have no idea how to actually put it back... So can you please help with that too?
Thanks a lot again for the post which is a great help for many users! You should be proud of contributing to the Ubuntu big family!
Cheers

Dear schwebbe,

I am very happy because I can help you having fun with Ubuntu :) . Just trying to help people as much as you can to make them satisfy with their lives, ... and later they will help you to satisfy your life. So being sharing as much as you can do.

Best regards,

Hello Francois,

I think that it is better if you try first with Live Ubuntu 64 bit to see this machine can be install Ubuntu 64bit or not, and later install that.

Best regards,

Hey,

I got the same notebook and I'm trying to install Ubuntu 9.04 with 64bits. Now the installation's over but I cannot connect to the internet! So no way of installing any driver especially the ethernet support driver that would get the internet going.... I'm desperate, is there anyone who knows where I could possibly find these and eventually connect?
